## EUDR

New market regulations are at the cutting edge of the fight against global deforestation. In June, 2023, the EU adopted the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which targets key commodities like cattle, cacao, coffee, and wood. The policy mandates that, after December 30, 2025, relevant products and their derivatives entering the EU market must be “deforestation-free”—not sourced from land that has been deforested since 2020 and comply with their production country’s local laws.

Companies will be responsible for conducting their own due diligence, assessing and mitigating risks of their supply chains’ non-compliance. Most importantly, companies will bear the onus of proving their compliance with the EUDR. Upon every export of a relevant good, trade operators must submit an official Due Diligence Statement declaring that their product is deforestation-free. Without this document, export to the lucrative EU market is forbidden. Violations of the EUDR will incur heavy penalties, including large fines and trading bans.

### What is the EUDR?

The regulation requires that exports sourced from these 7 key commodities must be deforestation-free.

**Products affected by the EUDR:**
- Cacao
- Coffee
- Rubber
- Cattle
- Soy
- Wood
- Palm

### What is “deforestation-free” according to the EUDR?

Land that has not been deforested by more than 10% since June, 2020.

**Example Derivatives**
The following products are derived from the 7 key resources and therefore fall under the EUDR. Producers of these and other products linked to the 7 resources will require a Due Diligence Statement before exporting to the EU market.
- Stearic Acid
- Soy Sauce
- Books
- Glycerol
- Wooden Furniture
- Leather

Even if the cows linked to your product are fed with livestock feed that has caused deforestation, your product is not EUDR compliant, and you will not be able to export your goods to the EU.

### What are Due Diligence Statements?

Due Diligence Statements, which must be submitted for relevant goods upon every export to the EU, are official documents that...
1. Declare that your products are sourced from deforestation-free land
2. Must be based on European satellite data
3. Can be produced by accredited, 3rd-party companies on your behalf

This Desidera subscriber is using the platform to verify that their land in the Mekong Delta is deforestation-free. Desidera shows that this plot of land has a deforestation rate below 10%—now the user knows this land is EUDR-compliant. They’ll be able to obtain a Due Diligence Statement for the land and export their product sourced from this land to the EU.
